To research how your tribe implements and changes law and order codes, browse your tribe’s website for any documentation. If you can’t find anything, talk to a tribal attorney. Each tribe’s process is different, so make sure you know the process front to back to effectively get the law passed.

Rebecca’s Experience

On the Colville Reservation, I contacted the Office of Reservation Attorney. They were able to direct me to the government section of the Colville Tribe’s website. The website explained a step-by-step process on how to implement and amend tribal law and order codes. The website also showed what the tribe already had in place for a car seat law. Once I had a prescribed method for policy change, I began drafting my own child passenger restraint law.
